A technical reference for steel sections, backed by over 30 years of experience

Soroush Steel Trading Company has been supplying and distributing steel products for more than three decades. On this site we have gathered the specifications, weight charts and standards of each section in one place, so that project materials can be chosen on the basis of accurate information.

Step by step

How to choose a steel section

  1. Define the useWill the member carry bending, compression, tension or fluid pressure?
  2. Choose the section typeEach section shape suits a particular kind of load; see the table below.
  3. Read the size from the chartNominal dimensions and mass of every size are listed in the guide for that section.
  4. Check the steel grade and standardThe grade sets the minimum yield strength and must match the drawings.
  5. Calculate the weightUse the calculator to get the mass per metre and the total mass.

Calculator

Calculate the weight of a steel section

Choose the section type and enter its dimensions. The calculation uses the density of steel (7850 kg/m³) and gives the theoretical mass; the actual mass may differ slightly within the tolerance of the standard.

–Mass per metre (kg)
–Total mass (kg)

Glossary

Common terms in the steel trade

Web and flange
The web is the vertical plate of a section and the flange its horizontal plate; used for beams, channels and angles.
Rib
The raised pattern on a rebar surface that improves the bond between steel and concrete.
Hot and cold rolling
Shaping steel at high temperature or at room temperature; cold rolling gives a smoother surface and tighter dimensions.
Hot-rolled and press-formed
Hot-rolled sections are rolled at the mill; press-formed sections are bent from sheet.
St37
The older name of the common structural steel now designated S235JR.
Schedule
A number that defines the wall thickness of a pipe for each nominal size.
Galvanized
Coated with zinc, which protects steel against corrosion.
Nominal mass
The mass calculated from standard dimensions; actual mass may differ within the tolerance.

Fields of use

Where are steel sections used?

BuildingSteel frames with I-beams and H-beams, concrete structures with rebar, and façades and railings with profiles.
IndustrialIndustrial halls with channels and angles, equipment frames with heavy profiles, and tanks with sheet.
Civil engineeringBridges, tunnels and dams with rebar and plate girders, and piling with large-diameter pipe.
Oil, gas and petrochemicalsTransmission lines and process piping with welded and seamless pipe.

About us

Soroush Steel Trading Company

Soroush Steel Trading Company, under the brand TFS Trading, is active in Iran's steel market and supplies rebar, I-beams, profiles, angles, channels, pipes and steel sheet for construction, industrial and civil engineering projects.

Common questions

How is rebar weight calculated?

Square the diameter in millimetres and divide by 162 to get the mass per metre in kilograms.

What is the difference between an I-beam and an H-beam?

In an IPE beam the depth is about twice the flange width; in an H-beam the flange width is close to the depth, which suits columns better.

Is a pipe's nominal size its outside diameter?

No. The nominal size is a designation; a 2 inch pipe, for example, has an outside diameter of 60.3 mm.

How do hot-rolled and cold-rolled sheet differ?

Hot-rolled sheet is rolled hot and cold-rolled sheet is rolled at room temperature; cold-rolled sheet is thinner, smoother and more accurate.
